When Is a Photo Change Allowed (or Required)?
You do not have to wait 10 years for your passport to expire to replace an embarrassing or outdated photo. The US Department of State allows passport photo changes anytime by submitting a standard passport renewal via Form DS-82 (or DS-11 if ineligible for mail renewal).
Furthermore, an update is required if you have undergone significant facial changes due to extensive facial surgery, major trauma, substantial weight loss/gain, or gender transition.
Cost and Submission Process
Changing your photo requires applying for a brand new passport book. You must pay the standard renewal fee ($130 for adults), submit your existing undamaged passport, and provide a fresh 2x2 inch biometric photograph taken within the last 6 months.
