What you need to print passport photos at home
- Inkjet or laser printer — Any modern home printer works. Inkjet produces better photo quality.
- Glossy photo paper (4×6 inches) — Available at any office supply store for $5–$10 per 50 sheets. Semi-glossy also works.
- A compliant digital photo — Use PhotoResizer.us to create and validate your photo before printing.
Don't have a printer? Create your 4×6 template online, then print at Walmart ($0.25), CVS ($0.35), or Walgreens ($0.35) at the self-service kiosk.
Step 1: Create your compliant photo
Before printing, your photo must meet government specifications:
- Upload your photo to PhotoResizer.us.
- Our AI runs a 14-point compliance check.
- Background, dimensions, and file size are auto-corrected.
- Download the compliant JPEG file.
Critical: Never print without validating first. A rejected printed photo wastes paper, ink, and your time.

Step 2: Create the 4×6 print template
A standard 4×6 inch print can fit four 2×2 inch passport photos — enough for two applications. Our tool automatically generates this template with proper spacing and cut guides.
If creating manually, ensure each photo is exactly 2×2 inches with at least 2mm spacing between them. The template should be 1800×1200 pixels at 300 DPI.
Step 3: Printer settings for passport photos
- Paper type: Select "Glossy Photo Paper" or "Best Photo" in your printer settings.
- Quality: Set to maximum/best quality — never use draft mode.
- Size: 4×6 inches (101.6 × 152.4mm).
- Scaling: Set to 100% — do NOT let the printer "fit to page" or scale the image.
- Color management: Use sRGB color space (default on most printers).
Test print: Print one copy on regular paper first to verify sizing. Measure the passport photo with a ruler — it should be exactly 2×2 inches.
Step 4: Cut and verify
Use a paper cutter or sharp scissors to cut along the template guides. Each photo should be precisely 2×2 inches. Verify:
- Photo dimensions are exactly 2×2 inches
- Colors look natural (no yellow or blue tint)
- No smudges, streaks, or printer artifacts
- Paper is glossy, not matte
If anything looks off, adjust your printer settings and reprint. The cost of reprinting is negligible compared to a rejected application.
