Top 5 Reasons US Visa Photos Get Rejected

Most rejections are caused by invisible violations the human eye can't detect — but our AI catches them instantly.

37% of rejections

Background Not Pure White

Even 1% shadow or color variance triggers automated rejection. Our AI replaces it with mathematically perfect #FFFFFF.

28% of rejections

Head Size Out of Range

Must be 50–69% of image height. 48% or 70% means instant rejection — invisible to the human eye, caught by our AI.

18% of rejections

Eye Level Height Wrong

Eyes must be exactly between 1⅛" and 1⅜" from the bottom. Our AI measures and auto-crops to the exact position.

12% of rejections

Uneven Lighting / Shadows

Harsh shadows on face or ears from side lighting. Our AI normalizes exposure and removes shadow artifacts.

5% of rejections

Wrong Dimensions or File Size

DS-160 requires exactly 600×600px, ≤240KB JPEG. Our tool auto-resizes and compresses to exact specs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the free photo check really free?
Yes, 100% free with no sign-up required. Upload your photo and get an instant pass/fail result with specific issues listed. You only pay $4.99 if you want us to auto-fix detected problems and download in HD.
What does the AI check for?
Our 14-point biometric scan checks: background color purity (must be white), face position & centering, head-to-frame size ratio (50–69%), eye level height, lighting & shadows, image dimensions (600×600px), file size (≤240KB), and expression/eye openness.
Which photo types does it support?
US Passport (2×2 in), DS-160 Visa (all types: B1/B2, H1B, J1, F1, L1, O1), DV Lottery / Green Card (600×600px), USCIS forms (I-130, I-485, N-400), and Global Entry / TSA PreCheck.
What if my photo fails the check?
No problem — that's why the check exists! You'll see exactly which requirements failed. Click "Fix & Download HD" for $4.99, and our AI auto-corrects background, positioning, size, and file format. If the fixed photo gets rejected by a government agency, we reprocess it free.
How is this different from PhotoAiD or Visafoto?
PhotoAiD charges $13.95 and Visafoto charges $7+, with no free check. We give you the compliance check completely free — you only pay $4.99 if you need the fix. Same AI compliance standard, 70% cheaper.
Is my photo safe?
Privacy first. Photos are processed in your browser when possible, and on secure servers they are automatically deleted within 5 minutes. We never store, sell, or share your images.
My background looks white but keeps getting rejected — off-white vs pure white?
This is the leading frustration for DIY photo takers. Your wall may look white to your eyes, but cameras often capture it as slightly grey (RGB 240,240,240) or slightly blue/yellow depending on lighting. Government scanners check for pure white values above RGB 245,245,245 across the entire background area. Even a 5% deviation triggers rejection. Our AI measures the exact RGB values of every background pixel and normalizes them to a government-compliant pure white (#FFFFFF) while preserving the natural edges around your hair and shoulders.
Can I wear glasses in my US passport or visa photo?
No. Since November 1, 2016, the US Department of State has banned ALL eyeglasses in passport and visa photos — including clear prescription lenses, reading glasses, and transition (photochromic) lenses. This applies to US passports, DS-160 visa applications, DV Lottery entries, and all USCIS forms. The only exception requires a signed medical certificate from a doctor. Sunglasses are never allowed. If your photo shows any glasses, it will be automatically rejected by the CEAC biometric scanner before a human officer even sees it.
